Freckles are small brownish spots which most often appear on the face and shoulders. They appear due to clustering of the pigment melanin in one spot. Their formation is triggered by sun exposure; in the summertime they are more pronounced while in the winter they become lighter in colour and less visible. They have a strong genetic basis and appear mostly in people with fair skin, red hair and green eyes. No worries, however, they usually pose no health hazard.
