Genetic testing for ankylosing spondylitis

Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the joints, affecting primarily the spine and the pelvic joints. At the point of contact of tendons with the bone, there is an inflammatory reaction, responsible for the typical symptoms of the disease. The initial symptom is usually pain in the lower back which may cease through physical activity. The disease may appear at any age, but it most commonly affects men in their second or third decade.
Why should you have your DNA analysed for predisposition to ankylosing spondylitis?
The main cause of the disease lies in the genes. To corroborate this statement, patient's relatives have a 16-fold greater chance of getting the disease than the rest of the population. By checking your genome we can study the genes that control the inflammatory reaction, thus importantly affecting the course of disease.
How is ankylosing spondylitis prevented or treated?
Medications reduce the joint inflammation and pain when it becomes unbearable. Besides taking medications, however, it is of utmost importance to stay active and maintain joint flexibility. In order to achieve that, one must make some lifestyle changes to include more physical activity and the right exercises.
