Classes of scientific confidence

Low

Low scientific confidence includes diseases and traits with the genetic research in its infancy as well as diseases that are less strongly genetically determined. Association studies that are used by GenePlanet for the purposes of interpretation of the results are often of inferior quality and include smaller study population samples. In addition, fewer genes are tested.

Moderate

Moderate scientific confidence includes diseases and traits whose genetics has only recently become the subject of research. These studies are of higher quality and performed on larger populations. However there are only a few regions of your genome scanned, either because genetic research of this disease or trait is in its infancy or because the disease or trait is less strongly genetically determined. The more SNPs we can scan, the more accurate we can determine your predispositions.

High

High scientific confidence includes genetically highly researched diseases and traits with ample data that are consistent and obtained from high-quality association studies with very large case and control populations. These diseases and traits are usually strongly genetically correlated with many identified disease-determining genes.

Studies linked to other races (for other races)

Currently, no association studies that apply specifically to your race exist. Your personal data are interpreted on the basis of association studies involving the Caucasian race. Therefore, the results of your personal analysis may somewhat deviate from reality.

Criteria for determining the class of scientific confidence

For diseases

In order for the analysis to be classified as Class 2, at least two of the following three criteria must be met

• At least three SNPs are checked for the disease,
• At least one gene that contains the SNP is described for the disease and logically linked with it,
• Most SNPs stem from research studies with more than 500 test subjects and controls.

In order for the analysis to be classified as Class 3, all criteria for Class 2 as well as two of the following three new criteria must be met

• At least five SNPs are checked for the disease,
• At least three genes that contain SNPs are described for the disease and logically linked with it,
• Most SNPs stem from research studies with more than 1000 test subjects and controls.

For traits, medicaments and talents

Studies for traits, medicaments and talents are usually less ample and accurate. That is why the class of scientific confidence is determined by GenePlanet experts and scientists. Their estimation is based on accuracy of the study, data consistency, size of the studied population and the number of scanned genes.
